Shifts in the 2022 Election Cycle

The 2022 election may go down in history as one of the most lopsided if Marcos is able to hold onto the lead and win on election day. This is probably one of the most boring elections post-Marcos because none of the candidates comes close to the communication style of Rodrigo Duterte.

A Marcos win would go down in the history books as one of the most surprising political comeback for a family who was ignominiously driven from their official residence, vilified and ostracized before a global audience. No other ousted “dictator’s” son has been able to make a political comeback on this scale throughout the world.

We are also seeing the demise of national political party’s. Marcos is running under Partido Federal ng Pilipinas. Sara Duterte’s original political party is Hugpong ng Pagbabago. Only Lakas-CMD remains visible but this is only because GMA is still part of it and it was used as the vehicle for Sara’s entry in the Vice-Presidential race.

The Nationalist People’s Coalition of Danding Cojuangco has died a natural death. The demise of the Boss signaled the beginning of the same for the party he organized in 1992 for his Presidential candidacy and nurtured to use as political leverage for his businesses which were sequestered by the PCGG.

Danding’s lieutenant, Ramon Ang, did not want to become its titular head because he would rather bankroll candidates of his choosing directly. RSA is supporting Isko Moreno in this cycle. It does not look as if he has the same political acumen as his former boss.

This is also the reason why the initial strength of the Lacson-Sotto tandem fizzled out in February. Sotto was acting as the titular head but apparently had not called for a meeting of the members. The resolution adoption Ping Lacson as its official candidate for President never materialized. At the start of the official campaign period for national posts, Lacson and Sotto found themselves alone. Politicos who defected to Reporma last year went back to their original party’s which aligned themselves to the BBM-Sara UniTeam. Even the alliance with Jojo Binay’s UNA did not prosper because Binay took offense that he was included in the list of candidates who appeared at some of Robredo’s sorties endorsing her.

The President’s party, PDP-Laban, has not resolved the squabble between the Pimentel Wing and the Cusi Wing. For the first time in post-Marcos political history, the administration party was unable to field a full slate of national candidates from President to Senators.

The internal squabbling was added onto by the feud between the President’s children and his loyal aide Sen. Bong Go. The Davao Origs were not inclined to support a Marcos candidacy. They preferred either Go or Alan Cayetano, in order to stay in power. Later on, it became a Go-Duterte tandem with the blessing of the President. It again changed to become Sara-Go. But the recalcitrant Presidential daughter would have none of it and she withdrew from Presidential contention and filed her candidacy for her last term as Davao City Mayor. We all know what happened after.

Alan Cayetano was responsible for this fiasco as he took the initiative of becoming Go’s Rasputin along with Martin Andanar and the rest of the Palace clique which also moved for the ouster of Jun Evasco as Cabinet Secretary.

APC was also on the outs with the President for his dismal performance as Secretary of Foreign Affairs and his attempt to not honor the gentleman’s agreement with Lord Allan Velasco for the term-sharing of the House Speakership. Cayetano is now a political pariah but will likely win a new Senate term. He will likely parlay this into leverage as he and his sister could become the swing vote in a Senate where neither those identified with either the administration or the opposition have a simple majority. It remains to be seen how the wind will blow at the upper chamber after the election.

But yesterday, the PDP-Laban formally endorsed the candidacy of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for President. Sara Duterte also confirmed that her father met with Marcos at the Malacanan Golf Club over the weekend. All’s well that ends well.

Last but not the least, the Yellowidiots/Pinklawans. Leni Robredo stuck a knife into the Liberal Party with her rebranding and running as an “independent.” The Delusional Dilawans are bending over backwards trying to find a bright ray of sunshine in their campaign which can give them any hope of winning. It has come to the point that they are behaving like idiot rednecks who deny climate change. In their case, they deny the validity of scientific surveys and make up bullshit about Facebook Analytics and Google Trends.

You are all well-aware of the adage that “those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.”

Make no mistake about it, the Yellowidiots/Pink Talunans are going mad. They have gone to the extent of inflating rally attendance numbers to give the public the impression that the momentum has shifted in their favor even if this “support” is not reflected in at least even a slight uptick in voter preference for Robredo.

The Yellowidiots still cannot read the writing on the wall that the greater majority of Filipinos has had it with them. Their impending loss in this election cycle should confirm this sentiment once and for all. But they will not be extinct any time soon. You can be sure they will continue to make noise on the sidelines, specially if Marcos is the President.

It just becomes a question of how much noise it will be. What I am confident of is majority of Filipinos are looking forward to June 30 when the new administration takes office with a President and Vice-President who are both on the same page and we can finally move forward on a positive note despite the turmoil in the world.
