Ipokrito at Trapo

Political Dynasties 2022: Evardones reach Eastern Samar summit

The question of who’s the hypocrite applies to Inday Espina Varona. The ipokrito and trapo applies to Leni Robredo.

In the 2022 election cycle, Rappler has stepped up its game as the opposition mouthpiece and fact-checker. This begs the question, who died and made Maria Ressa a Nobel Laureate? What is Inday Espina Varona, a prominent leftist-militant, doing in bed with a media organization that is deemed to be a tool of Amercian hegemony? This is the ipokrito aspect of the question for Varona, who left her cushy post at ABS-CBN for Rappler. At least, that’s how it was made to appear. It is no wonder then that leftist-militant groups have been providing the Lopez’s with the warm bodies as they protested the House of Representatives denying their new franchise application.

In the case of Robredo, she undertook a rebranding and repackaging of her image for the 2022 election, dropping the Liberal Party and the its trademark Yellow ribbon to run as an “independent” and adopt Pink as her campaign color. Why did not she think of this for the party after their 2019 disaster? The answer is obvious. No vision. No planning. No foresight. She had to be “persuaded” to run. Part of the packaging since 2013. Always the “reluctant” candidate.

Varona and Robredo are like two peas in pod in terms of how they view the average Pinoy. Never mind our inconsistencies. Robredo wants the public to be believe she’s not traditional politician or trapo even if she is. Varona is the same when it comes to articles in Rappler. How many former “journalists” have run for public office and established a political dynasty?

Ironically, the question was asked at the boring Comelec debate again last night? What to do with political dynasts?

The anti-dynasty provision is enshrined in the 1987 Constitution but the enabling law has never been passed by Congress. The lawmakers will not pass a law which is detrimental to them. Is it not hypocritical of the opposition to claim they are the good guys when they do not have the political will to pass legislation even when they have a majority in both houses of Congress?

Both Robredo and Varona are living in a dreamworld if they refuse to acknowledge political realities. The fact that Robredo would accept an endorsement from Congressman Pantaleon Alvarez without even thinking about it first goes to show how much she needs each and every endorsement she can get, even if at the expense of a rival with whom she met with last year for the “unified opposition” coalition she was trying to build.

However, Both Robredo and Varona as just out to maintain their standing in the respective power blocs they belong to. Leftist-militants want to oust “US-Duterte” while liberals like Robredo embrace the US. It is nothing about their countrymen they claim to serve. It is all about them.

They are also about to have an existential crisis. It remains to be seen how long Rappler can stay funded as a propaganda arm by its patrons should it fail in its purpose of preventing a Marcos Presidency. Perhaps it will continue to receive funding in order to maintain the narrative that the Philippines is better off with the US than with China but as we have seen one month into the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Biden administration has to contend with a looming economic downturn due to the spike in energy prices.

The same is true with Robredo. There is no more Liberal Party because there is no one with deep pockets who is willing to fund it. She will go back to Naga defeated without any political post to use as a platform until 2025 when the midterm election is held.

The Evardone’s are just being true to form. They are no different from the other political dynasties ruling LGUs or regions. But the truth is, it is not as simple as an enabling law for the anti-dynasty provision in the Constitution that is needed.

What will really make an impact on the people is the restructuring of the political system as a whole. The best is a federal parliamentary form of government. Let the people decide. What is wrong with having elected officials in office for an extended period of time sans term limits if they are doing their job and the the people benefit from the same through efficient delivery of government services and economic development?

If you really want the country to progress and build on what has been started by the Duterte administration, vote for continuity. Do not vote for Robredo and her leftist-militant allies which are front organizations of the CPP/NPA/NDF. This is not red-tagging. It is simply being realistic. If they cannot accept the risk that comes with being communist sympathizers then they have no business enjoying the perks of their positions. They should be able to ride and die for what they believe in.
